Zoho Books is online accounting software with inventory, billed per organisation, and ERPNext is a full ERP. Zoho sells payroll as a separate product, so where payroll comes up we compare against Zoho Payroll.

When Zoho Books is the better choice
- You sell services or trade goods with simple stock, and want to be invoicing this week.
- Your finance team is a few people and fits inside a plan's user count.
- You already use Zoho CRM or Zoho Mail and want accounting from the same vendor.
- You have ten or fewer employees, so Zoho Payroll is free for you.
When ERPNext is the better choice
- You manufacture, with BOMs, work orders, job cards or subcontracting.
- Stock runs across warehouses with batches, serial numbers or landed costs.
- Many people need access. ERPNext has no per-user fee and no plan ceiling on users.
- You need custom workflows or approvals and don't want to move to a premium tier to get them.
- You want to own the system, the code and the database yourself.
Moving from Zoho Books to ERPNext
How the move worksMasters, a trial balance and open invoices come across, and Zoho stays read-only for the history.
From Zoho Books, the usual path is masters plus a trial balance as on the cutover date, then open invoices and bills. Importing the full transaction history is rarely worth what it costs, so it's usually better to keep Zoho read-only for a while.
Item and party masters need cleaning before import. Map Zoho's tax settings to ERPNext tax templates and check them on a test invoice before anyone raises a real one.
If you also move from Zoho Payroll, run one month in parallel and compare every payslip before you switch.
